The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has secured a landmark deal to provide consultancy, educational and training services to the Municipality of Chongqing, China. The deal, which was secured at the end of last year, represents a significant milestone for the CIEH and reinforces the organisation’s position as a leading force in the health and safety market in the UK and overseas.
Key features of this agreement include the CIEH:
• reviewing health and safety legislation in China with the aim of introducing ‘UK standards’ of health and safety
• conducting a health and safety audit of Chongqing’s industries
• developing a plan to introduce an inspection system for Chinese workplaces
• establishing a register of competent health and safety consultants with capacity building for technical expertise

The CIEH’s Chinese partners chose to follow British standards after having benchmarked their existing situation against both UK and US standards, and deciding that the UK had a better record on fatalities, injuries, and ill health among workers.

Commenting, Graham Jukes, CIEH Chief Executive, said:
“This is a truly remarkable partnership between one of the world’s leading public health organisations and one of China’s most economically important cities. The agreement is a culmination of the important commercial and educational partnerships the CIEH has developed in China over the past decade. It is also recognition of the contribution our members have made in ensuring that the UK is one of the safest places in the world to work.

“We have found our experiences in China incredibly rewarding and inspiring. This is a rapidly growing and enterprising part of the world that has made a strong commitment to high standards of workplace safety and consumer protection. The CIEH is looking forward to growing our presence in China and building mutually beneficial relationships.

“This agreement provides us with a unique opportunity to share UK knowledge and expertise in occupational health and safety – gained over 125 years – with our partners in Chongqing.
“On the consultancy and training front we anticipate building more effective public health partnerships across China. We believe our relationship with Chongqing can act as a template for further agreements where we can advise partners to improve safety and performance and achieve internationally-recognised standards of best practice.”

In January 2010, the CIEH was awarded a prestigious and much coveted Cathay Pacific China Business Award in recognition of its success in establishing business ties in China.
