Michelle Aldous – Constructing Better Health
Constructing Best Practice

Constructing Better Health is the 'not for profit' organisation set up by the construction industry to implement a national scheme for the management of occupational health across all sectors. The presentation will give an update of the progress made to date in the implementation of this important national scheme and outline future developments. Central to the presentation is the Construction Health Assessment Toolkit (CHAT) demonstrating ' best practice' in the management of work related health issues at site level.

11.00amView Seminar

Kevin Bridges – Pinsent Masons LLP
Corporate Manslaughter/ Homicide – The Impact

The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 came into force on 6 April 2008 with the stated aim of making it easier to convict companies and other large organisations where serious management failures result in death. The Sentencing Advisory Panel has suggested that convicted organisations should face a substantive fine - between 2.5 and 10% of their annual turnover.
The presentation will introduce the Act and the new statutory offence of corporate manslaughter/homicide and its anticipated impact on corporate and personal liability.

12.15pmView Seminar
Nigel Bryson – Bryson Consulting

Getting Workers Actively Involved in Managing Risks to Health and Safety

According to the Health and Safety Executive, 60% of employers in the UK do not consult their workforce about health and safety. Not only is this illegal, but it means that they are missing out on all the business benefits that such involvement would bring. This presentation will identify the business benefits that effective workforce involvement brings: reductions in accidents and ill-health and increases in productivity or service performance.

2.00pmView Seminar

Sarah Brown - HSE
Asbestos - The Hidden Killer

An update on current asbestos issues and recent initiatives. This will include a summary of the HSE's recent, national, media campaign - a campaign designed to raise awareness amongst tradesmen (i.e. those engaged in building repair, maintenance and refurbishment, such as plumbers, electricians and joiners) of the risk of exposure to the substantial amounts of asbestos still contained in many buildings. It will also focus on the work that HSE has done nationally with key stakeholders (such as Trade Unions, Trade Associations, DIY chains and Victim Support Groups) to promote the campaign, its messages and to distribute campaign materials. Finally, the presentation will look at the impact and evaluation of the national campaign.

The Importance of Training Manual Handling – Train the Trainer

Over 1 million people a year in Britain suffer from work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). MSDs account for around half of all work-related ill health and an estimated 12.3 million working days lost, at a cost to society of £5.7 billion. Employers are required by law to provide information and training. Although this in itself will not ensure safe manual handling, this should not be regarded as a substitute for a safe system of work. Training personnel to lift safely and avoid injury is the dilemma for the trainer as manual handling covers such a vast range of activities in the workplace. How does one pitch the training to achieve the best effect?

10.45amView Seminar

Ian Samson - DuPont
The correct method of selection and use of chemical protective clothing

When it comes to choosing protective coveralls, specifications are often littered with scientific terms that users are unable to put into practice context. Chemical protective clothing specialist Ian Samson will cut through the technical jargon to discuss best practice in the selection of limited use protective garments, and once selected, how a protective garment must be put on (donned) and removed (doffed) to avoid the potential for cross-contamination of hazardous substances after the wearer has left the “danger zone”.

Mark Carpenter - Ansell Healthcare Europe
Protection and Productivity in the Food Industry

The food industry is faced with imperatives which are hard to reconcile; assure an effective production, while at the same time protect workers better and better. Cold working environments can cause musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs and the risks of cuts to hands need to be reduced. How important are gloves in the prevention of these problems and how can they contribute to the performance of a company?

Neil Budworth – E.ON
The Role of the Health and Safety Practitioner in Workplace Health and Wellbeing

Today there is an epidemic of work related ill health, with health related worklessness costing the UK the equivalent of the GDP of Portugal. This presentation explores what the safety and health practitioner can do to play their part and help stem this relentless tide of misery.

Working at Height

Falls from height are the major cause of death within the construction industry. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 apply to all work at height where there is a risk of a fall liable to cause personal injury. They place duties on employers, the self-employed, and any person who controls the work of others to the extent they control the work. An overriding principle is to do all that is reasonably practicable to prevent anyone falling. The presentation will cover all aspects of safety when working at heights, setting out the simple hierarchy for managing and selecting equipment for work at height and outlining some of the fundamental measures required for a safe system of work.

Mark Thomas – HSE
Shattered Lives: A STEP in the right direction

The presentation will demonstrate the new, innovative Slips and Trips eLearning Package (STEP), the latest addition to HSE's extensive range of guidance and materials available under the 'Shattered Lives' Campaign. The second phase of the campaign is about promoting action in the workplace to address the risks of slips, trips and falls from height. The interactive eLearning package is one of the tools that will help employers take effective action to tackle their risks. Anyone can use it: workers, managers, business owners, and health and safety professionals as it contains three courses: introductory, intermediate and advanced.

The presentation provides details of the 10 engineering noise control techniques that can be applied to some of the most common noise problems. Complete with multi-media case studies, they are low cost, applicable across wide range of industries and can be implemented in-house. Moreover, in some cases, the noise control measures will actually save money, making the process self financing.
