Corporate Manslaughter/ Homicide – The Impact
The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 came into force on 6 April 2008 with the stated aim of making it easier to convict companies and other large organisations where serious management failures result in death. The Sentencing Advisory Panel has suggested that convicted organisations should face a substantive fine - between 2.5 and 10% of their annual turnover.

Getting Workers Actively Involved in Managing Risks to Health and Safety
According to the Health and Safety Executive, 60% of employers in the UK do not consult their workforce about health and safety. Not only is this illegal, but it means that they are missing out on all the business benefits that such involvement would bring. This presentation will identify the business benefits that effective workforce involvement brings: reductions in accidents and ill-health and increases in productivity or service performance.

Sarah Brown - HSE
Asbestos - The Hidden Killer
An update on current asbestos issues and recent initiatives. This will include a summary of the HSE's recent, national, media campaign - a campaign designed to raise awareness amongst tradesmen (i.e. those engaged in building repair, maintenance and refurbishment, such as plumbers, electricians and joiners) of the risk of exposure to the substantial amounts of asbestos still contained in many buildings. It will also focus on the work that HSE has done nationally with key stakeholders (such as Trade Unions, Trade Associations, DIY chains and Victim Support Groups) to promote the campaign, its messages and to distribute campaign materials. Finally, the presentation will look at the impact and evaluation of the national campaign.

The Importance of Training Manual Handling – Train the Trainer
Over 1 million people a year in Britain suffer from work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). MSDs account for around half of all work-related ill health and an estimated 12.3 million working days lost, at a cost to society of £5.7 billion. Employers are required by law to provide information and training. Although this in itself will not ensure safe manual handling, this should not be regarded as a substitute for a safe system of work. Training personnel to lift safely and avoid injury is the dilemma for the trainer as manual handling covers such a vast range of activities in the workplace. How does one pitch the training to achieve the best effect?

The correct method of selection and use of chemical protective clothing
When it comes to choosing protective coveralls, specifications are often littered with scientific terms that users are unable to put into practice context. Chemical protective clothing specialist Ian Samson will cut through the technical jargon to discuss best practice in the selection of limited use protective garments, and once selected, how a protective garment must be put on (donned) and removed (doffed) to avoid the potential for cross-contamination of hazardous substances after the wearer has left the “danger zone”.

Protection and Productivity in the Food Industry
The food industry is faced with imperatives which are hard to reconcile; assure an effective production, while at the same time protect workers better and better. Cold working environments can cause musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs and the risks of cuts to hands need to be reduced. How important are gloves in the prevention of these problems and how can they contribute to the performance of a company?
