Young people entering the world of work are twice as likely to have an accident at work as their adult counterparts. The presentation will survey the measures put in place by BSC, and others, to raise young peoples’ awareness of the risk of injury and ill- health

Local government is facing significant workforce challenges with an older than average workforce which is getting older. Further, local government is changing through reorganisation and in the way that services are delivered. Sickness absence continues to be an issue. Local government must respond to these challenges with the health, work and wellbeing agenda providing an opportunity to create better work and enhance working life.

With joint training at the heart of workforce involvement in the new Health and Safety Executive Strategy, this presentation will identify the business benefits that effective workforce involvement brings: reductions in accidents and ill-health and increases in productivity or service performance. Based on case studies, the presentation will identify how effective workforce involvement can help drive continuous improvement of health and safety performance in organisations.

An update on current asbestos issues and recent initiatives. This will include a summary of the HSE's recent activity- working with partner organisations on a campaign designed to improve the management of asbestos in buildings by targeting those with the responsibility to manage buildings.

The presentation will also focus on the work that HSE and partner organisations have done, nationally, to raise and maintain awareness to trades and maintenance workers of the risk of exposure to the substantial amounts of asbestos still contained in many buildings.

Finally, the presentation will look at the impact and evaluation of campaign activity.

In this presentation, the implementation of a PPE programme is considered, with an emphasis on selecting appropriate PPE. The audience is taken through a step by step approach with helpful references to key HSE publications and some alarming statistics. The aim of this presentation is to provide some general guidance for the selection of PPE and to promote best practice.

Selecting a protective garment that is fit for purpose can often be time-consuming and arduous because individual factors must always be taken into consideration when assessing the risks. This presentation will include advice and guidance on what to look for in Type 5 and 6 chemical protective garments and explain the European Standards.

The presentation will enhance the understanding for better evaluation and control of a risk, being major or incidental, in handling activities across most industry sectors.

It's easy to know what you have to do to manage safety but, sometimes, less easy to know how to do it on a daily basis. This presentation gives some practical everyday advice for all managers and supervisors.
