The Access Industry Forum at The Health and Safety Event 2014

21 January 2014

« Back to news items

Established in 2004 to provide an industry focal point in advance of the introduction of the Work at Height Regulations (WAHR), the Access Industry Forum (AIF) - 'the alliance for access' - provides a forum for nine of the principal trade associations and federations involved in both temporary and permanent work at height. Its aim is to advance safety, best practice and competency, irrespective of equipment type or safety solution.

Its member organisations represent a variety of access industry sectors including ladders and stepladders, mobile access towers, powered access, fall arrest and safety net rigging, industrial rope access, temporary and permanent faade access, personal protection, edge protection and rescue equipment.

In addition to establishing the position of the access industry on matters of legislation and regulation, the Forum promotes the link between training and competency by advocating the need for users of all types of access equipment to be professionally trained to a recognised standard based on agreed work procedures.

The Forum's message is consistent and clear: "Work safely and competently at height using appropriate equipment with personnel professionally trained to industry recognised standards."

Since 2004 the Forum has entered into strategic partnerships with a number of trade and professional bodies, including the Association for Project Safety (APS) and the Designer's Initiative on Health & Safety (DIOHAS). The aim of these agreements is to provide advice and assistance to each other's organisation and respective members by recognising and benefiting from each other's knowledge and skill base.

These partnerships are typical of the way in which the Forum is now engaging with other leading safety-related organisations with a view to finding common ground and a co-ordinated approach to the issue of training, qualifications and competency.

At The Health & Safety Event the Forum will deliver three presentations, one each day, focusing on the latest WAH developments, standards and guidance - Working at height: Take it from the top - and from its stand will offer advice and information including its free new PocketCard highlighting the essentials of working safely at height.

Presentations - Day 1: 12.05 - 12.35 Day 2: 14.55 - 15.25 Day 3: 12.40 13.10

The Forum comprises: BSIF; EPF; FASET; IPAF; IRATA; Ladder Association; PASMA; SAEMA and WAHSA.
