The session will demonstrate how using the lessons from marketing and PR can help to get the safety message across in a cost-effective manner. It will cover issues such as: building your safety brand and establishing a communication culture and provide delegates with some practical tips to help their messages get noticed and understood.

The goal of zero harm or zero accidents assumes that all accidents are preventable. It follows then that all accidents are predictable. Is this an acceptable philosophy? It is a laudable aim, but does it go against our current approach to risk management and should we be accepting the concept of zero risk?



S2A 13:40 - 14:40 Gayle Brewer, Senior Lecturer in Psychology: University of Central Lancashire Psychosocial Risks in the Workplace Psychosocial factors present a major threat to employee safety. The presentation will outline four specific psychosocial risks: stress; shift work, bullying and boredom and the consequences of these for the employee, employer and organisation. Successful approaches to target each psychosocial risk will also be introduced.

S2D 11:20 � 11:50 Ken Smith: Divisional Director- Arco Training and Consultancy Confined Spaces � Don�t Be In the Dark With the introduction of the new Approved Code of Practice and Guidance L101, for confined spaces, this presentation looks at the changes and how they might affect different organisations. There are now more areas to consider, more industries that might have confined spaces and more emphasis on tasks that create a hazardous area that might be a confined space. Similarly, there is greater clarity on what isn�t a confined space and, mixed in with guidance on training and equipment inspection, there�s plenty to talk about.

S2F 14:45 � 15:15 Elaina Harvey, UK Thermal Specialist for Nomex� & Western Europe Electric Arc End User Specialist: Dupont Personal Protection How to Assess Electric Arc Hazards and Protect Workers The DuPont "4 P� approach to understanding and managing electrical arc hazards will be summarised (Predict, Prevent, Protect and Publish). Where the risk cannot be controlled by prevention or where there is a residual risk of injury then it may be necessary to consider Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent injury to the worker. Within the Protect section, the new arc flash standards IEC 61482-2, EN 61482-1-1 and EN 61482-1-2 will be highlighted together with a lightweight, comfortable European layering approach to ensure that the worker is not restricted from cumbersome clothing.
