ACAD BACKS HSE’S 'ASBESTOS: THE HIDDEN KILLER' CAMPAIGN
December 05th 2008

Figures recently issued by the Health and Safety Executive revealed ‘every week 20 tradesmen die from asbestos-related diseases’, and this number is set to increase. The HSE’s ‘Asbestos: The Hidden Killer’ campaign therefore aims to reduce the rising death rate by educating today's tradesmen about the danger asbestos presents to them. ACAD are supporting the campaign by posting a mail shot to 4,000 tradesman in the north east, promoting ACAD’s asbestos awareness training in Darlington and distributing asbestos awareness posters around building merchants.

Steve Coldrick, Director of the HSE's Disease Reduction Programme explained why a major campaign has been launched to raise awareness of the real risk tradesmen face, "Exposure to asbestos is the biggest single cause of work-related deaths, with around 4,000 people a year dying from asbestos-related disease. The overall number of deaths is rising because a large number of workers who have already been exposed to asbestos dust around 40 years ago will go on to develop mesothelioma or other asbestos related diseases."

As well as the mail shot, ACAD also took part in an interview for BBC’s Look North programme where one of ACAD’s trainers and training manager explained the dangers of asbestos. The clip can be viewed at: Click Here.

For those concerned about possible exposure to asbestos, representatives from ACAD will be available to discuss asbestos awareness training in more detail on the company’s stand at Health and Safety 09 – South in February.
